Strolling through Istanbul: The Classic Guide to the City

By Hillary Sumner-Boyd & John Freely

The book to buy for any homeowner in Istanbul! Sumner-Boyd  and Freely take the reader through the city by foot. Not a weekend or short trip guide but a must for those on longer trips or that will visit over and over again.

Offering several walks throughout the many districts of the cosmopolitan city the book helps us to take in the many sites and antiquity on offer including the usual suspects including Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque and many that are not covered at all in your standard travel guide and without spending hours studying a map or getting lost in the famous alleys and side streets surrounding the most frequented tourist attractions.

The walks are set out into chapters and the authors direct us either around or within the city’s monuments whilst informing us on the history and architecture.

The authors are very clearly well informed and researched. John Freely has penned over 30 books including travel guides and books on history and science. Strolling through Istanbul was originally written alongside Hilary Sumner-Boyd in the 1970s and updated in 2010 in line with a number of changes the city has seen in that time.

The book is an interesting and informing read to pick up even before one set foot into the sprawling metropolis, but it can at times feel a little academic and presumes the reader has a ready knowledge of architectural terms and knowledge of the history of Istanbul.

Many of the sites are fascinating but the odd few could easily be missed out should the reader want to. The biggest downfall may be the lack of information on how long each individual walk may take.

The book is great addition to the library of any who has purchased or is looking for property in Istanbul.

Year Round Summertime For Turkey

Turkey will not be setting the clocks back on October 30th.

Inline with a changes brought in by the parliament Turkey will not be not putting their clocks back 1 hour as inline with European countries. The change is set to save the country around 2.5 billion lira ($805 million) in electricity bills.

This means that Turkey will for 6 months of the year be ahead of the UK by 3 hours. We hope this will cause no problems to you in the long run but advise anyone with flights or transfers in the coming days to double check pick up times with tour operators.

So a full year of summertime - doesn't that just sound like a great excuse to treat yourself to a holiday during the cooler months?

A Day In Çeşme

Cesme Resort & Marina

This month we’ve celebrated a staff birthday and in typical Aegean Dream Homes style valued a property (There’s no rest for an Estate Agent!) in the delightful resorts of Çeşme and Altaçatı.

Located in the province of Izmir the upmarket and chic resort is a must for celebrities and the jet set.

We planed to start the day by visiting a property we’d be instructed to list for sale – a wonderful villa set in it’s own private garden, then freeing up the rest of the day to explore the picturesque resort of Alaçatı and the colourful resort of Çeşme separated by a quick visit to the Ilıca beach.

As soon as we arrived at the 4 bed villa we knew we just had to secure it for our portfolio! The property sat in it’s own garden offering plenty of greenery from the established palm and fruit trees and has a garden floor which has been converted into a separate apartment style accommodation. Ideal for large families or for those who want to relocate to Turkey and have plenty of space for guests.

After taking all the relevant details and photos we were ready to enjoy the resort for ourselves. First stop Çeşme and a stroll through the cobbled streets toward the 500 year old Ottomon castle and charming sea front. With constant sea breezes it’s a great place for a sit and cool down before moving onto the yacht and superboat lined marina for some retail therapy and a coffee in one of the trendy coffee shops.

We drove to the Ilıca in the late afternoon to check out the beach, which not only holds an international windsurfing completion but has famous thermal springs and through the summer months is the ideal sandy getaway for those that like to Celeb spot. Although on this cool late summer day there was no Brangelina or great pals Russell Crowe & Cem Yılmaz for us to spot. But that didn’t matter to us for us the star of the day was still to come…

Early evening and the oncoming sunset saw us navigate back towards the marina for some low cost but delicious traditional Köfte (meatballs) while we watched the local Aristocats embark on their new hangout and then a short drive to the stunning resort of Alaçatı.

With it’s narrow cobbled streets and charming stone buildings the resort is a real Turkish delight and a star in it’s own right. Definitely the ideal place for romantic walks, strolling by the boutique shops and stalls offering charming handmade goods and keepsakes.

The day was a blast and ended as all fine working birthdays should idling away the hours sat in front of a quaint coffee shop people watching and drinking Turkish tea before heading home.

Property in Çeşme is sought after by both Turkish and International buyers and is around an hours drive from Izmir international airport. The area offers apartments but is famed for it’s spacious, attractive villas. It remains a favorite for property rentals and due to the rate and demand therefore offers an attractive investment potential.
